Burnt pit in Stag Park

Archaeological works, undertaken in 2004 in advance of the construction of the N8 Mitchelstown relief road, revealed a burnt pit with associated stake-holes as well as two other pits and an isolated stake-hole (CO019-173----). The burnt pit (6.25m x 3.25m; D 2.18m) had charcoal-enriched basal fills and showed signs of in situ burning. Two groups of stake-holes cut its upper N and S sides. The group on the S side of the pit, comprised eleven stake-holes (diam. 0.02-0.06m; D 0.06-0.1m). That on the N side consisted of six stake-holes (diam. 0.06-0.12m; D 0.06-0.2m) that were more widely spaced.
