Kiln

This corn-drying kiln (4.72m x 1.49m; D 0.5m) was excavated in 2004 in advance of the construction of the N8 Mitchelstown relief road. The kiln lay beneath a spread of burnt material probably raked out from the kiln. It was keyhole-shaped in plan with a shallow circular pit-cut located at the entrance to the flue. The sides of the bowl and the flue were lined with three to four courses of random rubble limestone. A radiocarbon date of cal. AD 1310-1434 (UB-6833) was obtained for the kiln. The kiln was located in a roughly rectangular paddock (25m N-S; 15-30m E-W) defined by a fosse (Wth 1.6m; D 1.1m) and with an entrance (Wth 5m) in its S side. The excavator (Sutton 2006b, 13) concluded that this paddock and the kiln were likely to be contemporaneous.
