Burial ground in Coolbane (duhallow By., Tullylease Par.)

Burial ground

What is recorded here

Coolbane is a lost burial ground because even its boundary has vanished from the field. That absence makes the place harder to forget: the dead are not being preserved, they are being erased. A church may have stood there, but no stone or ditch remains to argue with the claim. The land has taken back the names and events that once gave it shape.
Bowman (1934, 715) recorded 'early church site and burial ground on Joseph Forrest's land; there is now no sign of either church or burial ground.' Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
