Fulacht fia in Ballygarvan

Fulacht fia

What is recorded here

Two lost cooking pits once stood near the Ballygarvan church, heating water with fired stones before human bodies could be imagined inside them. They vanished without a trace, leaving behind only the memory of steam rising beside a sacred place.
According to O'Leary (1918, 162), 'Windele makes mention of two folacht fiaidh or prehistoric cooking places (see CO086-076----), near the church at Ballygarvan, but no traces of them remains'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
