Moyry Castle is a small three-storey stone tower built in 1601 by Lord Mountjoy to guard the deadly Moyry Pass. Tradition claims a wizard’s black cat avenged the man killed by the castle guard, stalking the soldiers and carrying off their livestock until the pass became infamous for more than rocks and rain. The castle survived that strange loss, witnessed later armies marching through the gap, and still stands on its rock like a small stubborn witness to every road forced through northern Ireland.
