What is recorded here

Not inidicated is a hidden underground passage beside the rath in County Monaghan. Local memory claims a stone lintel once marked its entrance, but that feature has vanished. The passage may have served people who lived near the rath, giving them a quiet route through soil or a shelter when storms came.
There is local knowledge of a Man-made underground passage in the bank of rath (MO030-032001-) at NNE, which is said to have had a lintelled entrance, but it is no longer evident. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 25 August 2017

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
