Rathfarnham Castle has a gate lodge built like a triumphal arch, with the back grander than the entrance. You arrive as a minor inconvenience and leave as though you’ve conquered France.

Detached former gate lodge, c.1780, built in the form of a triumphal arch, with flanking quadrant screen walls. Currently unused. Ashlar granite walls with engaged Doric columns, corner pilasters and engaged square columns, niches, full classical entablature and balustraded parapet having urns. Pair of doors under main arch. Cast- and wrought-iron gates. Banded ashlar granite to screen walls with terminating piers.

A fine, handsome fully classical former gate lodge with many notable well-preserved features. Former rere elevation now facing street is more richly treated than the entrance elevation. Acts as a landmark at this junction, which it dominates.
