Rath Brogue

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on circular enclosure defined by hachures on 1908 'OS 6-inch' map. Described locally as having int. diam. of c. 28m enclosed by earthen bank (H 1m, max. diam. c. 40m). Levelled, but sometimes visible as cropmark. Possibly a ringfort. Aerial photograph (GB89.AH.29) shows cropmark of a sub-circular enclosure defined by a fosse (Barrett 1989).

Rath Brogue, Rathrush is a circular earthen ringfort, typical of early-medieval agricultural settlements in Ireland, dating likely between the 5th and 10th centuries AD. Local tradition associates such sites with fairy folk, and it may have been considered a place of supernatural significance in folklore.
