Cast-iron post box, erected c.1915, attached by round-profile straps to side of square-profile timber post. Round-headed top section with ‘LETTERS ONLY’ in raised lettering above angled slot aperture, notice sleeve to lower section with royal cypher ‘GR’ to base. Imprinted manufacturer's lettering to rear, no longer legible.

A rare example of a post box in this form and bearing the cypher of George V (r.1910-1936) of the model LB207-LB210 many of which were manufactured by the A. Handyside foundry and sometimes referred to as ‘Hovis’ boxes, having a loaf-like top. Inspite of its modest size the post box carries important symbolism, representing the change-over from British rule to Irish independence, as many post-boxes were painted green within a decade of their installation.
