Portal tomb in Aghnacliff

At the foot of a low hill, some 70m from a stream, in rolling farmland. A short chamber is aligned N-S. On the E side are a tall portal-stone (H 2m) and, to its S, a sidestone (H 1.2m). The portal-stone on the W side is missing but an inward leaning sidestone (H 1.2m) survives. Above the orthostats are two large roofstones resting one above the other. The lower of these (L 1.7m; Wth 2.2m; T 1.2m) rests upon the two sidestones. The upper roofstone (L 3.2m; Wth 2.3m; T 1.5m max.) rests upon both the portal-stone and the lower roofstone. A preservation order was placed on this monument in 1933. Portal tomb, dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000–2500 BCE). This site represents an early form of megalithic funerary architecture, significant for understanding prehistoric settlement and ritual practices in the region.
