Pit in Newcastle

A cluster of pits uncovered and fully excavated by Jonathan King under licence No. 16E0446 during development works for the Center Parcs Leisure development. In poorly drained area of coniferous plantation. Site identified as consisting of two post-holes, a hearth (dims. 1.33m x 0.88m x D 0.19m), two pits and a very shallow post hole. The first pit (dims. 1.07m x 0.86m x D 0.4m) contained an orange quartzite water rolled platform core. The two postholes to the N of the hearth measured between 0.26m and 0.33m wide. The more southerly pit (dims. 0.6m x 0.6m x D 0.42m) contained a deposit of deliberately placed crinoid echinoderm fossils some of which were deliberately burnt.
