Oldcourt House

Detached T-plan five-bay two-storey Georgian country house, built c.1770, incorporating fabric of earlier tower house. Now in use as private house. Later lean-to extensions to rear (south-east). Hipped slate roofs having rendered chimneystacks with timber and cast-iron rainwater goods. Rendered walls with slate hanging (south-west). Square-headed openings with six-over-six and six-over-two timber sliding sash windows and stone sills (north-west). Square-headed openings having one-over-one, two-over-two and two-over-three timber sliding sash windows and timber casement windows with stone and concrete sills (north-east and south-west). Round-headed opening with timber fixed pane windows and spoked fanlight (south-west). Recessed square-headed door opening with timber glazed door, overlight, engaged fluted columns supporting entablature and having cut limestone step. Square-headed door opening (south-east) with replacement timber glazed door. Outbuilding to rear. Rubble limestone boundary walls to sides, rear and drive with gate piers and wrought-iron fence.

A significant eighteenth century house which is an important addition to the architectural heritage. It is one of a handful of large dwelling dating to that century surviving in this part of the county. The fenestration rhythm is an immediately obvious eighteenth century feature. The plain façade, with the centrally placed doorcase providing the decorative focus is also typical. The surviving slate hanging contributes much to its character, and is a feature which though once characteristic of Cork county, is now sadly increasingly rare.
