Mount Leader

Detached three-bay single-storey former gate lodge with hexagonal-plan projection to front, built c. 1830, now in use as private house. Hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks. Painted rendered walls. Triangular-headed window openings with limestone sills and traceried windows. Front projection having sixteen-pane windows, fixed window to front and eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash to side walls. Main block has four-over-pane timber sliding sash windows and replacement timber windows, some square-headed and some with render sills. Square-headed door opening with replacement timber door. Painted rendered square-profile piers to front painted rendered boundary walls, with cast-iron gate. Gate lodge set to inside of quadrant entrance gateway to Mount leader, having ashlar limestone masonry walls with remains of render copings and limestone plinth, terminating in a pair of square-profile piers with carved limestone caps and plinths.

This gate lodge once formed part of the Mount Leader demesne. The form of the house is unusual with a hexagonal projection to the front elevation. The building retains interesting features such as decorative traceried windows which enliven the façade. The site retains the remains of the entrance piers and walls to Mount Leader house and are indicative of the quality of early to mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship.
