Mound in Cloonbullig

Mound

What is recorded here

Knox recorded a small inhabited mound in Cloonbullig in 1911, but never revealed where the marsh kept it. It may still stand beside its larger neighbour, hidden under grass and water while the forgotten castle watches from beyond.
This record refers to a mound noted by Knox (1911, 211) in Cloonbullig townland. He provided scant detail, merely stating that it is a ‘small mound’ which ‘is supposed to have been inhabited’, rising out of marshy ground to SE of a larger mound (MA103-046001-), with the site of a castle (MA103-047----) c. 100m to N. The precise location of the mound is unknown. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 November 2022
