Mound in Barleyhill

In pasture, prominently located on a rise with a steep slope to S, and good views over the surrounding expanse of reclaimed pasture and boggy land. Circular earthen platform (14m N-S) defined by a scarp topped with an irregular, intermittent stony rim (Wth c. 2m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6m). The stony rim, which is thickly ringed with hawthorn bushes, is rather uneven in height and width, and in parts is set in from the edge of the scarp; it is unclear to what extent it represents the remains of a bank or heaps of field clearance stone. The top of the mound is strewn with stones and occasional boulders, and is partly obscured by overgrowth. The nature of this mound is unclear. It may be the remains of a structure, such as a lime kiln, associated with a cluster of buildings/farmstead which was located nearby to SE (and is shown on the 1838 and 1931 OS 6-inch maps), but was removed during land reclamation.
