Moated site in Thomastown Demesne South

Moated site

What is recorded here

In pasture, on gentle SSE-facing slope. This moated site adjoins moated site (TS068-007----) to its E side and moated site (TS068-007003-) to its S-side. Rectangular area (dims. 32m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by earthen bank (Wth 4.85m; int. H 0.55m; ext. H 0.91m) at E (L 28m) and N (L 29m; Wth 5.2m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 1.55m), curving at corners. Defined by scarp (Wth 2.15m; H 1m) on S (L 23m) and W (L 31m) sides. Shallow external fosse (Wth 5.6m; Dth 0.25m) to N and a wider more defined fosse (Wth 7m; Dth 1.2m) to E is shared with conjoined moated site (TS068-00701-). Traces of a narrow, external bank (int. Wth 0.4m; ext. Wth 0.4m; Wth top 1.4m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.25m) and traces of external fosse² (Wth 1.5m; Dth 0.25m) visible on N-side only. Interior of monument tends downslope very gently to SSE. Remains of conjoined hut sites/internal structures (TS068-00704-) within centre. Leat system (TS068-00705-) defined by slightly sinuous channel extending to WSW from external fosse. Probably the out-flow leat of the complex as is on downslope. Not clearly evident on N side, probably due to disturbance by trackway. Field system (TS068-00706-) to S and SE.
