Markree Castle

Detached three-bay two-storey rendered gate lodge, built c. 1880. Rectangular plan, single-storey full-width lean-to to rear (north), single-storey flat-roofed extension to north-east c. 1990, gable-fronted entrance porch c. 2004 to south. Pitched slate roof, clay ridge tiles, painted smooth-rendered corbelled chimneystacks, half-round cast-iron gutters on eaves corbel course, cast-iron downpipes, painted timber eaves and bargeboards to porch. Painted roughcast walling, smooth-rendered ruled-and-lined walling to porch. Square-headed window openings, smooth-rendered reveals, limestone sills, painted two-over-two timber sash windows, fixed multi-pane casement windows to east and west elevations. Square-headed door opening in entrance porch, painted half-glazed timber door with two bottom panels. Entrance gateway to north-east with rubble limestone piers, dressed limestone caps, rubble stone quadrant walls, wrought-iron flat-bar gates. Rear of house faces road, front looks across fields to Markree Castle.

This simple gate lodge commands a spectacular view of Markree Castle to the south and is, in turn, clearly visible from the Castle grounds. Simple balanced proportions combined with retention of original details and use of high quality materials ensured a successful renovation. An impressive entrance gateway to the north-east has handsome piers and wrought-iron gates.
