What is recorded here
Attached four-bay former market building, built c. 1840, having high arcaded ground floor to front, three-storey south bays and two-storey north bays, southern three bays of arcade now used as shops and having two-storey lean-to shop buildings to front, and northernmost bay being throughway to lane accessing St Mary's church and graveyard. Pitched slate roof with render eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and rendered chimneystack. Lined-and-ruled rendered upper walls with dressed limestone quoins and dressed limestone platband to north arch, other arches being rendered. Square-headed openings to upper storeys of south bays with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows, concrete sills and exposed red brick surrounds to one opening. Round-headed openings to upper floor of north bays, one now infilled, with replacement uPVC windows and concrete sills. Middle of three shops of lean-to projection has double one-over-one pane timber sliding sash window to first floor and southernmost shopfront has fluted timber pilasters, plinths, carved brackets and dentillated cornice, plate-glass display window with overlights and recent glazed timber door with overlight. Replacement fittings and shopfronts to other bays.
The formerly arcaded ground floor of this former market building is still visible behind the additions to the front façade, and this together with its large size and height make it an unusual feature on the streetscape. The lean-to projection is unusual and retains one timber shopfront. The arched access to the churchyard integrates the building closely with the townscape and with this other public site.
This does not grant access. Most recorded buildings are privately owned; view them only from public ground unless the owner allows entry.
