Underground rooms hidden inside a Cork ringfort: stone-lined and oblong according to local memory recorded by Hartnett in 1939, later infilled and closed. No entrance remains visible, but the claim is that people once went down into built chambers beneath the fort and brought the openings shut again. Pitt-Rivers also found earth-cut underground chambers in two Mylane ringforts around 1865, though it is not certain which ones. The passage may have been a refuge, a store, or a forgotten way of moving through the fort when storms or enemies came; either way, the ground kept the shape of human hands.

In N side of ringfort (8530). Hartnett (1939, 303) recorded from local information that infilled openings in interior led to 'stone-lined oblong rooms', then closed up. No visible surface trace. Pitt-Rivers investigated Man-made underground passages in two ringforts in Mylane c. 1865 and described earth-cut unrevetted chambers in both but it is not possible to determine which ringforts are referred to (Twohig 1987, 43-4).
