Man-made underground passage

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Undergrowth now strangles the ringfort in County Cork, hiding a man-made passage cut into its north-west quadrant. People built that tunnel deliberately, perhaps to reach clean air, store possessions or escape danger when storms pressed the land. The forgotten entrance still waits beneath the vines, waiting for someone patient enough to listen for the difference between solid earth and hollow space.
In NW quadrant of ringfort (CO046-049001-); interior of ringfort inaccessible due to overgrowth. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
