Man-made underground passage in Rathaneague

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible surface trace remains, yet inside the Rathaneague ringfort a collapsed stone-built underground passage still exists. McCarthy recorded it in 1977, preserving the hidden shape of a place that now resists easy imagination. People may have built it to store, hide or escape, while the earth took it back.
In ringfort (CO054-007001-). McCarthy (1977, 379) recorded collapsed stone-built Man-made underground passage. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
