Death and darkness may have filled the narrow passage when people stopped using it. Bowmen and fences marked the edge, but the digger’s spade cut through the roof and the chamber collapsed. The hollow remains a shallow wound in the south fosse, wide enough for a child to stand inside. The ringfort keeps the shape of the loss even when the passage itself has vanished.

In ringfort (CO023-05801-). Bowman (1934, 179) noted that 'a Man-made underground passage was built on the fosse side of the inner rampart. Fences are on each side of the Man-made underground passage which is now practically destroyed.' Hollow (D c. 1.2m) still visible in fosse on S side, flanked by field fences running N-S across fosse.
