Caislean an Cnuic, the castle on the hill, stood in the Hill Fields just south of Newmarket House until the Desmond Rebellion stripped the McAuliffes of their estate. No wall or trench remains visible, yet the land still carries the shape of a lost stronghold. Perhaps footsteps still echo beneath the fair field, marking the exact spot where human pride clashed with royal wrath.

No visible surface trace but, according to local information, site of a castle of the McAuliffes. In demesne of Newmarket House (14888), just S of where 'Fair Field' is marked on 1937 OS 6-inch map. Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 362) noted that there was formerly a castle on 'The Mount near Mr Aldworth's Lodge' (14888). According to Bowman (1934, 170), castle was called 'Caislean an Cnuic' and was located in 'Pairceanna a cnuic - the Hill fields' c. 800m S of Newmarket House. Castle forfeited as part of McAuliffe estate after Desmond Rebellion (Bowman ibid.). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
