What is recorded here

No visible passage remains, but the missing ringfort and lost tunnel point to a hidden underground chamber that men dug or shaped before the land was changed. It may have served as a cellar, refuge, ritual chamber or simple cut through living rock. The field has taken back the shape, yet the absence still records the intent of the people who believed the earth could be opened and used.
No surface remains visible of any Man-made underground passage that was reportedly located inside ringfort (OF031-031001-) that has since been levelled (Dunlevy 1975, 33). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
