What is recorded here
Lug Holy Well in County Offaly is a dry-stone shaft, 3.5m deep and 1.5m across, set in flat drained land surrounded by bog. It was water-filled when last seen, but the opening has since disappeared under soil or cover. The well may have served prayers, healing or ordinary drinking before humans removed its edge from view. What remains is a hidden depth in ordinary ground, waiting to be remembered rather than measured.
Situated on flat well drained land with bog on all sides. Circular well (D. 3.5m deep; Diam. 1.5m) with dry-stone lined shaft, water filled at time of visit. Holy well appears to have been filled in or covered over in recent times. Well shaft no longer visible above ground (pers. comm. Offaly Heritage Officer 17/08/2015).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Linked to the god Lugh, an important figure in Irish mythology associated with skill, craftsmanship, and sovereignty, the well may have been a site of seasonal rituals or offerings. Traditionally, such wells were believed to possess curative properties, particularly for eye ailments and general weakness, and were often venerated on Lammas or Lughnasadh.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
