Lohort Castle rises eighty feet above Cecilstown with walls so thick they shrugged off Cromwell’s cannons in 1650. Donogh Og McDonagh McCarthy raised the tower in 1496, but Oliver Cromwell’s troops captured it after a brutal siege. The Percivals rebuilt it around 1750 and lived there until the IRA burned it in 1922, leaving behind a scarred monument to endurance rather than a polished mansion.
