Liscussee

Located just S of the summit of a small N-S ridge, it is described in gothic lettering on the 1907 edition of the OS 6-inch map as ‘Liscussee’. This is an oval or D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 36.6m NE-SW; 29.4m NW-SE) that slopes down slightly to the S. It is defined by an earthen bank and hedge with an outer fosse, but the fosse is replaced by a roadway W-N-ENE. The entrance (Wth of base 2m) is at SSE. Liscussee is a likely early-medieval ringfort, or rath, situated on a ridge and marked in gothic lettering on the 1907 OS map. Its name and location are consistent with traditional Irish fairy forts, which are often associated with local folklore involving supernatural beings.
