Lisleaghan

Located on a prominent rise and at the SW end of a NE-SW ridge. It is c. 90m E of where a W-E branch of the Blackwater River joins the main N-S section of the stream within the village of Scotstown. This is a circular grass-covered area (diam. 31m NW-SE; 30m NE-SW) transformed into a tree-ring and planted with coniferous trees. It is defined by an earthen bank with bushes and an external stone facing, and there area traces of an outer fosse that may have been deepened SSE-W. There are entrance gaps at SSE and SW, the latter, now blocked, has a causeway over the fosse and is probably the original entrance The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
