Leagaun

National monument No. 247. Standing stone situated in grassland 550m NE of Lough Gur. Standing stones (LI032049---/050---) 280m to S, standing stone (LI032-035----) 250m to WNW. Listed as stone 'S' in 1912 and described by Windle (1912, 304) as following; 'This gallaun, on the other hand, is of considerable size and interest. It is situated on the very brow of the hill and overlooking a valley of fair size. It must have been visible from a great distance in the original state of the country, and indeed can now be seen, from far off in many directions to the north of Lough Gur. It is a large tabular stone, the bearing of the long axis of which is 183°. There are no striking horizon marks with which I could correlate it. It is 8 feet 6 inches [2.6m] in height, 6 feet 6 inches [2m] in breadth, and 1 foot [0.3m] thick. It inclines to the west at an angle of about 75°'. In 1944 the stone was described as 'a large limestone 8' [2.4m] high and 6' 1" [1.85m] at the base. It leans somewhat to the W and is now incorporated in a modern fence' (O'Kelly 1944,29).
