What is recorded here
Cast-iron vent pipe, c.1870, with fluted base, plain cast-iron shaft and crown head.
This sewer vent pipe is unusual in small towns. The fluted base is similar in form to cast-iron lamp standards of this era and the employment of modest detailing enlivens the appearance of an otherwise functional object. This sewer vent adds incidence to the footpath and is an interesting reminder of historic sanitation facilities.
