What is recorded here

Excavated in advance of road construction (Licence no. 08E054), the T-shaped kiln was interpreted as part of a medieval settlement (c.420m NW-SE by 180m) linked to the manor of Bremore or Balrothery. The kiln consisted of a sub-circular firebowl (1.8m diam.; 0.28m depth) and T-shaped flue (4.35m x 0.42m). Several sherds of medieval pottery were recovered from the fill. Analysis of charred seeds identified the presence of oat, barley, wheat, culm nodes, straw and weeds. Radiocarbon dating of a charred barley grain returned a calibrated date of 1284-1394 AD (Bailey and Kavanagh 2010, 23). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 2 February 2015
