Kilgobbin Castle stands as a five-storey square keep on the west bank of the River Bandon, where the Walsh family built it in the mid 15th century before later owners transformed its destiny. Martin McCarthy completed extensive restoration work in 2004, removing a massive oak that had rooted itself in the roof and returning the battlements to life. The castle now rises above a disused farm, creating a striking contrast between noble stone and rural quietude while remaining closed to visitors on private ground.
