Johnsgrove House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1770, having two-bay single-storey lean-to to rear. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls with painted limestone quoins. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows, and limestone sills. Round-headed window opening to east elevation having one-over-one pane stained-glass window with painted render sill, having oculus below with fixed paned window. Few windows to rear, north, elevation. Segmental-headed entrance doorway with spoked fanlight and timber panelled door having flanking sidelights and timber panelled risers, approached by flight of cut limestone steps to entrance. Six-bay two-storey outbuilding to east having pitched corrugated-iron roof, rubble limestone masonry walls, square-headed window openings with brick voussoirs, segmental-headed and pointed arch window openings with brick voussoirs and triangular-headed doorway with timber battened door. Five-bay two-storey roofless outbuilding to north, with rubble limestone walls, square-headed openings, windows having brick surrounds and door openings partially blocked up. Segmental-arched vehicular entrance with brick voussoirs. Three-bay single-storey gate lodge to south, now disused, having half-hipped slate roof with eaves course and brick chimneystack, roughcast render over rubble limestone walls, square-headed openings, with fixed windows and timber battened door. Painted rendered square-profile piers to road entrance with double-leaf cast-iron gates, set to painted rendered walls terminating in second pair of piers.

Johnsgrove House is distinctive forits finely carved limestone quoins and large window openings. The doorway retains its generous fanlight which reflects for the size of the window openings. The limestone steps lend the entrance an air of grandeur and are clearly the work of skilled craftsmen. The fine outbuildings and gate lodge add context to the site.
