John O'Shanassy was born in Ballinahow, County Tipperary, Ireland, on 18 February 1818, before crossing the ocean to become the 2nd Premier of Victoria. He arrived in the Port Phillip District in 1839, built a drapery fortune in Melbourne, and used that wealth to lead the local Irish Catholic community. His conservative politics clashed with liberal reformers and the newspaper The Age, yet he repeatedly returned to the premiership because his voice shaped the young colony.
