Industrial site in Castlemore

Industrial site

What is recorded here

Seven centuries before engines shook the earth, Castlemore already belonged to fire and force. Twenty-nine cottagers crowded the land beside at least one blacksmith, whose hammer struck hot iron while the others tended hearths, harnesses or hunger. Industry did not arrive later; it waited inside the village, patient as a forge guard, ready to be discovered.
The 1307 inquisition revealed that there were twenty-nine cottagers and at least one blacksmith in Castlemore (Mills 1914, 346). Reference: Mills, J. (ed.) 1914 Calendar of the Justiciary Rolls Ireland 1305-7, Dublin. Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 19 August 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
