Enclosure in Rathnashannagh was a rath about forty metres across, old enough to appear on the 1839 Ordnance Survey map. Quarrying cut through that memory until the pit was backfilled, leaving no visible trace. What remained was a absent shape, a hole in the land that had swallowed its own marker.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map and marked 'Site of Rath' (max. diam. c. 40m). Quarrying at site continued until fairly recently when pit was backfilled. No visible surface traces.
