Aghalackan EastMountain / peak · 1228 yd

Explorer Tom Aghalackan East is basically run by one very aggressive terrier who hasn’t been fed since the seventeenth century, so don't even think about sneaking past without his permission. He barks at clouds and demands tribute in the form of stale biscuits. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as I promise.

St Dymphna's Roman Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 1580 yd

Explorer Tom St Dymphna's Roman Catholic Church is built by someone who really wanted to make sure you noticed the roof slope, which is quite something for a place of worship. It’s got that striking form that makes you wonder if the architect was having a very good day or just a very ambitious one. Ending idea, never copy its

mill (water)1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Mill in Corrawillin would say in a job interview that it has excellent water-based benefits and a very heavy workload. It’s still got its wheel, which is basically the same as having a gym membership. Spin your head if you’re feeling dizzy.

Ancient Order of Hibernians MemorialMemorial · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Ancient Order of Hibernians Memorial in County Cavan hears the ghosts of old members complaining about their trousers being too tight. They’re very particular about their fit and won’t let go until someone adjusts the hem properly. Best visited with a curious kid and no timetable.

IndicatedHoly well · 1.2 mi

Explorer Tom Holy well in Corrawillin is just a horse’s hoof print in the river, which makes me wonder if that horse had excellent luck or bad shoes. Wave at the cows, because they’re definitely the real locals here.

Aghalackan WestMountain / peak · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Aghalackan West is refusing to let any bishop visit because he thinks they all smell like old vestments and bad decisions, which is honestly very fair considering the state of things. It just sits there smugly, knowing it’s got the better end of the deal every time. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think.

To The Memory of p.j. DukeMemorial · 1.9 mi

Explorer Tom To The Memory of p.j. Duke is claimed by one local guy as his own invention, despite being a Gaelic footballer’s memorial. He walks past daily and nods like he invented the sport himself back in the day. Go on a wet day, it suits the mood.

Carricknagore RockNamed rock · 3.0 mi

Explorer Tom Carricknagore Rock would write on its dating profile: 'Stable, grounded, looking for someone who doesn't need constant validation or a five-star review.' It’s just sitting there, unbothered by the tourists who keep trying to climb it and fall over dramatically. Perfect place to be dramatically windswept; lean into it hard.

Fin Mc Cools FingersStone row · 3.3 mi

Explorer Tom Fin Mc Cools Fingers in Shantemon are said to be the hand of a giant who got stuck in the mud while trying to steal a sheep and never managed to get free. The stones are graded in height so they look like fingers, which is a bit creepy if you think about it too hard. Go back in winter, it's a different animal.

Cormeen Glebe ForestForest · 4.0 mi

Explorer Tom Cormeen Glebe Forest nearly got famous when a movie director filmed a scene here but forgot to give the trees credit in the roll. It’s still waiting for its award and occasionally sways dramatically hoping someone notices its talent. Perfect place to be dramatically windswept.

Rambling at Farnham EstateVisitor information · 5.4 mi

Explorer Tom Rambling at Farnham Estate was the site where a priest lost a bet involving a goat and a very expensive hat. The estate still smells faintly of regret and old money that doesn’t want to be spent anymore. Find a local and ask them the real story, then come back and tell me.

European Beech5.7 mi

Explorer Tom European Beech in County Cavan would describe itself to a stranger as 'a very polite giant who likes naps'. It doesn't bark, it sighs. Bring curiosity, leave with a better story than mine, which was mostly about getting my shoe stuck in a root.
