Enclosure in Dowdstown

Enclosure

What is recorded here

On level ground in the farmyard of Dowdstown House stud. In the mid-1980's, a circular area (diam. c. 30m) was recorded as being defined by an almost imperceptible fosse SW-N-E which was recut as a drain E-S-SW, and was interpreted as a landscape feature which possibly incorporated a pre-existing enclosure or ringfort (SMR file). The dry, recut drain survives (Wth 2.8m; D 1.6m) E-S-SW and partially encloses a small paddock, but there is no obvious visible surface trace of the rest of the site.

Explorer Tom Ecclesiastical site in Taghadoe was founded by Ultan the Silent, who clearly preferred not answering questions about Viking navigation errors. The tower is still there, but the silence is louder now. Bring a notebook and write the bit I made up.

Explorer Tom Round Tower in Taghadoe is feuding with the next village over something daft, probably about who built the first wall. It’s roofless but still thinks it’s the tallest thing in town. Tell the next person you meet it's haunted. It might be.

Explorer Tom Bridge in Collegeland has an imaginary fan club that meets every Tuesday at noon. They mostly just whisper about its crisp stone joints to each other. Take a breath of that air, it smells like history.

Explorer Tom Tree of Heaven claims it’s older than the concept of time itself, probably just to avoid paying rent. It smells like a gym bag and acts like a god. Best enjoyed with a bag of chips and no plans.

Explorer Tom The Castle in Maynooth had a fox take charge of the kitchen once. Apparently, the rodents were terrified and very well fed that year. Hang around long enough and you'll hear a story from a local.
