Indicated

On S bank of Awbeg River, just N of Castle Curious (14947). Roofless, overgrown ruin of 2-storey rectangular mill (9.8m NE-SW; 5.2m NW-SE). Extended by c. 3m at SW end, at slight angle. Wheel-pit in river on NE side, fed directly by weir. Contains remains of wooden axle (with iron gudgeon) of undershot water wheel. Shaft extends within mill where it ends with cast-iron pit-wheel (diam. 1.8m). Lintelled channel crosses under NE end of mill. Conglomerate bedstone (diam. 1.2m) lies on ground to SE. According to Grove White (1905-25, vol. 3, 188-9), mill erected by local eccentric Johnny Roche, first as woollen and flannel mill, then as saw mill, later as stone-cutting mill, and finally as corn mill; it ceased to function as mill after his death in 1884 (ibid.). Named 'Old Corn Mill & Kiln' on 1842 OS 6-inch map, and as 'Creamery' on 1905 OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
