Indicated

At the E end of a slight WNW-ESE ridge overlooking the flood-plain of the W-E Hind River, c. 150m to the SE. Regarded locally as an abbey founded by monks from the Augustinian abbey of St Mary’s (LF021-048006-) on Inchcleraun in Lough Ree. It may have been associated with Felim O' Conor who founded the Domincan friary in Roscommon (RO039-055001-) in 1251, and whose house at Cloonsellan was burned by O'Rourke in 1261 (ALC vol. 1, 441). This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 15.1m E-W; 7.1m N-S) of which the ivy-covered N and W walls (T 0.9m) survive complete and the bases of the other walls. There are no architectural features, apart from the base of a piscina and aumbry or sedilla at the E end of the S wall. There is no evidence of an enclosure or burial, but the burial ground was traditionally c. 750m to the NE at Clooncraff (RO040-060001-).
