What is recorded here

Indicated is a ringfort on a Mayo ridge where ancient earth was rewritten into ordinary farm boundaries. The original oval bank still stands beneath hazel, blackthorn and bramble, but a straight field wall cut through its east side and stone fencing now dresses its slope. Inside remains a level grassy chamber, overlooked by bog and pasture, large enough to hold people, animals or memory. What was guarded, lived in or abandoned has not been lost, only buried under the practical hands of later farmers.

In pasture, located on the top of a NW−SE ridge, overlooking a flat expanses of bog. This possible rath is depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a broadly oval enclosure (c. 50m N−S; c. 65m E−W), ringed with trees; on the 1920 edition it has been incorporated into a system of field boundaries, and truncated on the E side by a NW−SE field boundary. Suboval slightly raised area (54m E−W; 42m N−S) defined by an earthen bank or scarp (ext. H 1.5m at N), which has been adapted to serve as a field fence around the entire circuit, and is now thickly covered in hazel, blackthorn and brambles and difficult to examine. The external slope of the scarp is faced with drystone walling, and the scarp is topped with a low stony internal rim (Wth 1m; int. H 0.4m). At E the enclosing scarp has been truncated by a straight N−S drystone field wall (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.8m).
