The decendents of Gilchrist Clerig Mac Dermot (died 1325) settled in Leamgire in the 14th century. In 1549 Rory Mac Dermot (KM 1549-68) helped the sons of Donnchadh Dubh to build or re-build the castle. It was owned by Owen Grana, a grandson of Donnchadh Dubh in 1585 and in 1617. In 1622 the castle and bawn were sold to Josiah Lambert, who also owned Canbo (RO010-084001-), by two sons of Owen Gran. (Mac Dermot 1996, 303-04, 453-4) Marked only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, it is situated towards the S end of a low N-S ridge and described as reduced to the foundations (T c. 1.8m) (OS Name Books). It is not visible at ground level. There is a punch-dressed stone in the gable of a disused farmhouse to the NE. Rath (RO010-076----) is c. 130m to the NE. Castletown was built or rebuilt in 1549 by Rory Mac Dermot, a Gaelic lord and chieftain, alongside the sons of Donnchadh Dubh. It is remembered for its association with the Mac Dermot family, who were significant local landholders in the 15th and 16th centuries.
