Indicated

Holy well

What is recorded here

Indicated is a holy well in wet Cork pasture where brick still hoops the water and an abandoned pump leans beside it. It belonged to the house of Laghtnan, and people once completed rounds there before the practice faded. The name appears on an 1842 survey as Tobertaghlaghnan, preserving a devotion that ordinary forgetfulness has not entirely taken.
In wet pasture, within demesne of Castle Lohort (14349). Named 'Tobertaghlaghnan' on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Well covered with hood of brick, with opening on top; old hand pump to one side. According to Bowman (1934, 61), called 'Tobar Tighe Lachtnan (The well of the house of Laghtnan)...Rounds have long since been discontinued.' The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
Linked to Saint Tobert, the well is associated with cures for skin ailments and general well-being. Local tradition holds that the saint was a hermit who lived in the area, and the name 'Tobertaghlaghnan' may derive from his name, reflecting his enduring spiritual presence in the landscape.
