What is recorded here

Raised circular area (int. diam. 31.7m) enclosed by a much-denuded, low earthen bank. An earlier report (OPW 1969) suggested that the original entrance was probably at SE. At the centre of the enclosed area is a low, roughly circular platform of earth and stone (diam. c. 8.5m) which presumably represents a hut site.

Ballaghanea Portal TombArchaeological place · 650 yd

Explorer Tom Ballaghanea Portal Tomb would win the lottery and buy a very large hat to match its style. It’s a stone doorway that never opened for anyone, just sitting there judging your fashion choices. Go on, count the windows and get it wrong like I did.

Ballaghanea Island SouthIslet · 1381 yd

Explorer Tom Ballaghanea Island South once hosted a dramatic duel between two ducks over a single crumb, which ended with one hopping off into the reeds in huff. It still hasn’t forgiven its neighbour. Toast it with a cup of tea and move on to the next.

RahardrumCastle, unclassified · 1403 yd

Explorer Tom Rahardrum on Lough Ramor thinks tourists from Dublin are just noisy ducks who don’t know how to row a boat. It’s an oval island with no castle left, which is very rude for a place called Rahardrum. The O'Reillys probably got tired of explaining the lack of walls. If anyone asks, Tom sent you.

Ballaghanea IslandIslet · 1571 yd

Explorer Tom Ballaghanea Island is playing hide-and-seek with me, pretending it’s got a twin across the sea that nobody’s ever spotted. It’s probably just being shy or lost in the mist again. Bring a coin for luck and keep it in your pocket.

farm house1.0 mi

Explorer Tom Farm house in Rahardrum has outbuildings that show off local stones like they’re jewelry. It’s been evolving for two centuries and still looks sharp, which is impressive for something that deals with cows daily. Ideal for a moody afternoon drink!

Sessile Oak1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Sessile Oak in County Cavan is playing hide-and-seek with me. I bet it’s hiding because it knows you’re not bringing a ladder. A handy spot to stretch your legs and your imagination, even if the leaves are judging your outfit.

Pollintemple HouseFarm house · 1.1 mi

Explorer Tom Pollintemple House would tell a teenager that the 1800s were basically just everyone wearing bad wigs and complaining about the weather all day long. It’s got robust stonework that says, 'I’ve seen things,' while looking very dignified on Dublin Road. Take a photo of those chimneys for me!

Welcome to VirginiaVisitor information · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Welcome to Virginia in County Cavan is where a fiddler played all night until the moon got jealous and went home early, leaving us in the dark. The music was so good it made the stones dance, or at least that's what everyone says. Bring a map, get lost anyway, that's the fun.

Grave YardGraveyard · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Graveyard in Raffony is guarding its secrets so tightly it's practically sweating. There are church ruins hiding in there, and if you're lucky, you might spot a ghost having a bad hair day. If it's closed, admire it from the road like a polite stalker.

European Yew1.8 mi

Explorer Tom European Yew in County Cavan got the Vikings completely lost looking for it; they ended up in France by accident. It’s that kind of confusing presence. Make up your own legend and I'll swear it's true, because who has the energy to fact-check a tree?

EnaghMountain / peak · 2.2 mi

Explorer Tom Enagh in County Cavan has an imaginary twin across the sea who sends postcards every Tuesday claiming it’s taller. Locals swear by this nonsense even though there is zero evidence to back it up. Go on, count the windows and get it wrong like I did.

IslandMountain / peak · 2.9 mi

Explorer Tom Island holds a fake world record for being the most confused geographical feature in all of County Cavan right now. It doesn’t even know if it’s an island, a peak, or just a very large puddle with ambitions. Bring a coin for luck and keep it in your pocket.
