Hut site in Bavan

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Remains of hut site situated in poor grazing land at the edge of a ravine. The site is circular in plan (int. diam. 4.8m) with a low grass-covered stone wall (Wth 1.7m, ext. H 0.2m, int. H 0.5m) enclosing a slightly sloping interior. A gap (Wth 1.3m) at the SE may represent the original entrance. Referred to by Stubbs (CLAJ 1908, 37) as a 'mount' and known locally as a 'fort' (OS Memorandum 6364 A).
