House

House, prehistoric

What is recorded here

Two oval houses, thirty-three to thirty-nine feet across, overlapped inside the ringfort. They were not twins; one stretched longer while the other remained broader. Both fit within the same defensive boundary, suggesting occupancy rather than a single ceremonial act. The overlap may mark renewal, division or forgetting. In a small fortified world, even domestication repeated itself.
One of two overlapping oval house sites (33ft by 39ft; 34ft by 38ft) in interior of ringfort (CO141-118001-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
