Attached three-bay two-storey house, extant 1838. Reroofed. In alternative use, 2008. For sale, 2011. Now disused. Replacement pitched artificial slate roof with ridge tiles terminating in rendered chimney stacks having stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta octagonal pots, and uPVC rainwater goods on rendered cut-limestone eaves. Rendered, ruled and lined walls on rendered plinth. Square-headed central door opening with scored cut-limestone step threshold, and drag edged rusticated cut-limestone surround centred on keystone below "Cavetto"-detailed cornice framing replacement timber panelled door having stained glass overlight. Square-headed window openings with drag edged dragged cut-limestone sills, and moulded rendered surrounds having bull nose-detailed reveals framing one-over-one timber sash windows having part exposed sash boxes. Interior including (ground floor): central hall retaining timber surrounds to door openings framing timber panelled doors; and timber surrounds to door openings to remainder framing timber panelled doors with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Street fronted with concrete footpath to front.
A house representing an integral component of the domestic built heritage of Castlebar with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such traits as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on a Classically-detailed doorcase demonstrating good quality workmanship; and the very slight diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a feint graduated visual impression with those openings showing sleek "stucco" refinements. Having been reasonably well maintained, the elementary form and massing survive intact together with substantial quantities of the historic or original fabric, both to the exterior and to the interior, thereby upholding the character or integrity of a house making a pleasing visual statement in the streetscape.
