Holy well in Monasterboice

Located outside the SW wall of the graveyard (LH021-062002-). Isaac Butler recorded a holy well dedicated to a Saint Kiarnan outside the graveyard at SW in 1744 (Deane 1922, 106), which explains why this angle is excluded from the graveyard itself. The holy well at Monasterboice is associated with Saint Kiarnan, a 6th-century Irish saint linked to the founding of several monastic sites in the region. Traditionally, the well was visited for its healing properties, particularly for ailments of the eyes and skin, and was likely a site of pilgrimage and ritual washing.
