Graiguealug Castle in ruins — Report the wrong picture

Graiguealug Castle vanished completely, leaving no visible trace despite appearing in ruins on the 1839 map. Local tradition claims three castles once stood in that townland, suggesting repeated building and loss rather than a single forgotten event. The complete disappearance defies ordinary decay, as if the land itself swallowed the stone and every memory attached to it.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Graiguealug Castle was a 15th-century tower house, likely built by the Butler family, who were prominent landowners in the area during the medieval period. It is remembered as an example of early Irish defensive architecture and for its historical association with the powerful Butler earls of Ormond.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
