Glinny House

Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1780, having entrance porch carried over arch leading to first floor west elevation. Hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystack and cast-iron rainwater goods on decorative iron brackets to south, replacement uPVC rainwater goods elsewhere. Rendered walls with plinth having slate hanging to first floor of south and east elevations. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone and replacement render sills. uPVC casement windows throughout with replacement timber casement to stairwell window to north elevation. Blind window opening to centre of first floor to front elevation. Gable-fronted porch to west having pitched slate roof with timber battened tympanum, bargeboards and uPVC rainwater goods. Red-brick stretcher bond walls with decorative tooled limestone plinth and rendered wall to north elevation. Square-headed door opening to north elevation having raised render door surround and replacement uPVC door and sidelights. Square-headed window openings having render sills. Six-over-six pane uPVC sliding sash windows to front (west) elevation and to group of five windows to side (south) elevation. Square-headed door opening with double-leaf glazed timber doors and stone stepped approach having tooled limestone capping to rendered parapet wall. Situated over rendered and lime-washed carriage arch to internal courtyard. Enclosed farmyard to west comprising of ruinous outbuildings with carriage arches. Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge to north-west having dormer attic and recent additions to rear (south-west) elevation. Hipped artificial slate roof with uPVC rainwater goods. Rendered walls and plinth. Pointed arch window openings having render sills to front elevation with historic timber casement windows. Square-headed window openings having replacement timber and uPVC casement windows throughout side and rear elevations. Pointed arch door opening having replacement timber door with decorative brass fittings. Exposed rubble stone enclosing walls with stone copping and square-profile piers to entrance.

This unusual house has been altered and modified over time to suit the changing requirements of its occupiers throughout the centuries and retains fabric from many periods. The unusual porch addition carried on an arch to provide access to the entrance level on the west side is particularly curious, while the altered south front may have originally functioned as the entrance front. The related buildings add much to its setting and context, and are indicators of the former grandeur and status of the demesne in the past.
